Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), 16th President of the United States, his signature "A. Lincoln" as President on one page, 5x8" (Washington, D.C.) telegram sent from
Springfield, Ill. to Lincoln on May 9, 1861, being a "Magnetic Telegraph Company" form to "A. Lincoln" with a message that reads simply "Will you accept a regimental command by me for the war - Wm. Phillips", at bottom Lincoln has written "I think
the name is Phelps - He is a good man. Will the War Department please answer him? A. Lincoln".This note, would presumably have been sent to Simon Cameron, Lincoln's first Secretary of War, and offers an insight into the hands-on approach Lincoln
would take in the war effort. A wonderful and attractive Lincoln signed presidential document. Some expert restoration and repair at the top, along with a reinforcing strip along the left edge, overall fine and perfect for exhibition or framing. (Image) |

1865 "Johnson's Box" labels, complete set of six labels with types I, II and III in green and red-orange (the type II green is unlisted by Springer), couple of small
flaws, a fine and rare complete set of these unusual labels; according to the Springer catalog, McElroy's Philadelphia directory of 1865 lists J.H. Johnson as a stationer at 7 N. 10th Street, Johnson issued these labels in connection with his "Free
P.O. Box", and the design was apparently issued to honor the martyred president; as with the previous lots their status is uncertain. (imagea)

Undersander #E27F, 1866 15c Lincoln unadopted stamped envelope essay, using the same die engraving of the 1866 postage stamp (Scott #77) imprinted at top right in
black on 86x155mm white laid paper entire, with interesting "short transfer" of design at top, with three-line "From the/National Bank Note Company,/No. 1 Wall St. N.Y." imprint at top left, quite fresh and very fine; although the One Cent and Three
Cent 1861 designs are recorded as similar stamped envelope essays, this is the sole example known of the 15c Lincoln design as a stamped envelope essay and was previously unknown until about nine years ago when it was discovered and made its
first appearance on the auction market; a marvelous rarity perfect as a frontispiece to a specialized collection of either the 1866 Fifteen Cent Lincoln stamp or for a world-class collection of postal stationery.
