struck circle of wedges and a small part of a c.d.s. cancel, an extremely fine gem in all respects. The Three Cent "Z" Grill is one of the most difficult of all the grilled stamps to find in truly choice condition. The overwhelming majority is off

#85E, 12c Black, "Z" grill, flawlessly centered within uncharacteristically large margins, deep prooflike color and a remarkably intense impression, lightly struck
black grid cancel, extremely fine; a truly extraordinary stamp.Like its Three Cent counterpart (see previous lot), the Twelve Cent "Z" grill is incredibly difficult to find in this stellar condition. Nearly all are poorly centered or have faults.
The example offered here is the polar opposite of the norm, as it is one of the finest quality used copies extant. And to find one collection that contains both the 3c and 12c "Z" Grills grading XF-Superb 95, is an unbelievable event that may never
be repeated.A superb gem of the utmost condition rarity. Accompanied by a 1995 PF certificate and a 2009 PSE certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $18,300.00); this is the only example in the PSE population report to grade 95, with only one grading
higher. (Image) |
