centered, slightly tropicalized o.g. as usual, very fine and choice; from the original sheet of 100, 78 were used on mail before the error was discovered, therefore only 22 mint examples were recovered (including four examples contained in the

22g |
#22g, 1c Green and black, Center and "Canal Zone" Inverted, a marvelously attractive top sheet-margin mint block of four, exceptionally well centered within wide
margins, deep luxuriant color, usual tropicalized o.g., bottom left stamp with a tiny thin speck and trivial natural paper wrinkle in the left margin, and a few faintly gum soaked perfs. at bottom, overall very fine. This is the only recorded block
of the One Cent Balboa with Inverted Center and represents four of the 22 known mint copies. The only other known multiple is the pair on cover offered in lot 207.One of the most important error rarities from the Canal Zone as well as a showpiece
for the Inverted Centers of the World collector. (Image) |

shorter perf. at bottom, very fine; although this error catalogs the same mint and used, it is far scarcer used, as only 13 of the 35 known examples are used (including the two copies in the following lot). (Image) |

22g |
#22g, 1c Green and black, Center and "Canal Zone" Inverted, horizontal pair tied to cover to Elyria, Ohio by a clear "N.Y. & Canal Zone/R.P.O/Mar 15/1909" duplex
postmark, Elyria receiver dated March 24, stamps well centered and with fresh colors, one stamp with trivial surface scrape, cover with minor flaws including a backflap tear repaired with archival tape, very fine. The discovery of this inverted
center is most interesting. According to "Canal Zone Stamps," a philatelist working at the Sanitary Department, Elmer Ohlson, found an envelope in the trash and tore off the corner with the stamp to put in his collection. After looking more closely
at the stamp, he realized it had an inverted center. Mr. Ohlson then informed fellow philatelist Dr. J.C. Perry of his remarkable find. Dr. Perry in turn phoned philatelist Dr. C.C. Pierce, who was Quarantine Officer at Cristobal, asking him to
search for more copies. Dr. Pierce found 22 mint examples from the mail clerk and sent them to Dr. Perry. When word of this new error came out, philatelists began searching envelopes for the remaining 78 copies that were used. A total of thirteen
used examples were found including the two on this cover. This pair is the only example to have survived on cover. The Scott catalog specifically lists this pair on cover, but its value seems inadequate, being a mere 25% above the value of two
off-cover singles.A great Canal Zone postal history rarity. Accompanied by a 1983 APS certificate. Ex-Helme. (Image) |

23g |
#23g, 2c Carmine red and black, Center Inverted, beautifully centered single with vivid color tied to cover to Elyria, Ohio by "Cristobal, C.Z./Apr 20" 1908" duplex
handstamped postmark, Elyria receiver dated May 4, cover with some light edge soiling, very fine.Unlike the One Cent Inverted Center of this series, the Two Cent value was not discovered until three or four years after it was issued. Apparently
one pane was issued with the center inverted and all were used on commercial mail. Only nine copies were ever found, all used and nearly all with faults to some degree. This is the only example known on cover. Interestingly this cover is from the
same correspondence as the unique One Cent invert (lot 207).Another important Canal Zone rarity from the Cunliffe collection. Accompanied by a 1983 APS certificate. Ex-Helme. (Image) |

31a |
#31a, 1c Dark green and black, "Canal Zone" and Center Inverted, strong rich color, 1913 duplex cancel, slightly blunted or scissor cut perforations at top,
fine.Although issued in 1911, this error escaped the notice of philatelists until this very example was discovered by George Wirth in 1932. Over the next six decades, three others were found (one badly defective) bringing the total number known
today to four. One trait that all four copies share is blunted or scissor separated perforations on at least one side, leading to speculation that these errors emanated from booklet panes, making it even more remarkable this error was not
noticed. One of the most famous of all Canal Zone errors. Accompanied by a 1953 PF certificate, as well as an article from Edward Conger relating his experience in trying to locate this stamp when it was still the only known example.
