S.G. #29 footnote |
S.G. #29 footnote, 1886 1p Revenue with red manuscript "Postage" provisional overprint, bright color, usual centering for the basic revenue stamp, clear single circle
"Grenada/C" c.d.s. of Sauteurs, a fine example of this incredibly rare manuscript provisional.Dan Walker, in his exhaustive unpublished census of the manuscript provisional stamps, records just five used copies with the red overprint (two from
Greenville and three from Sauteurs), one of which is in the Royal Collection, plus there is one unused example known (the ex-"Sovereign" copy). This stamp is clearly undervalued in the Scott catalog, as it is far more rare than the black manuscript
overprint that lists at $15,000.00. The Stanley Gibbons catalog simply states "from £7,500" for all the manuscript "postage" overprint, not distinguishing the red and black. Not only one of the important rarities of Grenada, but also one of
the key 19th century rarities of the entire British Empire. Accompanied by a 1979 RPS certificate; ex-"Sovereign" (Scott #18; $11,000.00). (Image) |
