S.G. #166b |
S.G. #166b, 1910-13 £1 Scarlet and reddish mauve, error of color, outstanding centering within lavishly large margins, gorgeous rich colors and strong
detailed impressions, o.g., relatively lightly hinged, extremely fine. This error was discovered in 1924 when Stanley Gibbons, Ltd., acquired all of the remainders of the Double Heads, and two sheets of fifty stamps of the £1 were found to be
in scarlet and reddish mauve colors. The two sheets were in distinctly different shades, with this example being from sheet number "2". In our extensive review of auction catalogs, we found the vast majority have small margins or were centered to the
right and/or bottom. The Rinkoff copy is one of the finest centered and margined examples extant, as only two or three others can compare. In addition, the stamps from both sheets possess gum disturbance to some degree, with this particular copy
having only a couple minor gum skips, far less severe than what is usually encountered.A visually striking gem for the collector who insists on stamps of only superb quality. Ex-"Apollonia" (Scott #118 var.). (Image) |
