#74, 3c Scarlet, an exceptionally handsome appearing used example of this trial printing rarity, characteristic four stroke pen cancel (internal paper break along the
second pen stroke), outstanding centering within very large margins, gloriously intense color and a razor-sharp impression on bright paper, fully intact perforations all around, even still retaining its full original gum, extremely fine despite the
break caused by the heavy ink of the pen stroke; very few examples of the Three Cent Scarlet exist, whether mint or used, and despite the disparity in catalog value we believe the used examples are far more elusive than mint copies; the used examples
with pen strokes are thought to come from a supply of Three Cent Scarlet stamps obtained by the Washington, D.C. stamp dealer Carl F. Rothfuchs in 1893; clear 1986 PF certificate and a 2006 PF certificate.

E27F |
Undersander #E27F, 1866 15c Lincoln unadopted stamped envelope essay, using the same die engraving of the 1866 postage stamp (Scott #77) imprinted at top right in
black on 86x155mm white laid paper entire, with interesting "short transfer" of design at top, with three-line "From the/National Bank Note Company,/No. 1 Wall St. N.Y." imprint at top left, quite fresh and very fine; although the One Cent and Three
Cent 1861 designs are recorded as similar stamped envelope essays, this is the sole example known of the 15c Lincoln design as a stamped envelope essay and was previously unknown until about nine years ago when it was discovered and made its
first appearance on the auction market; a marvelous rarity perfect as a frontispiece to a specialized collection of either the 1866 Fifteen Cent Lincoln stamp or for a world-class collection of postal stationery.

#77, 15c Black, off center single, used as a revenue stamp on a May 2, 1867 $250.00 promissory note from Seymour, N.Y., paying the triple 5c inland exchange
revenue rate for a note between $200.00 and $300.00, the Lincoln postage stamp was applied in lieu of an unavailable revenue stamp - an illegal usage, a practice sometimes seen on 1c to 3c denominated postage stamps of the 1861 regular issue series,
however documents bearing postage stamps with a face value greater than 10c are extremely unusual, some staining around stamp, about fine. (Image) |
