1005		1c Blue, Ty. Ib (5A). Position 6R1E, huge margins to just in at lower left, including sheet margin at top, beautiful Plate 1 Early color, bold strike of blue Cincinnati O. circular datestamp VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE TWO MOST DISTINCT TYPE Ib POSITIONS FROM PLATE ONE EARLY, SHOWING THE COMPLETE DESIGN AT TOP AND NEARLY COMPLETE DESIGN AT BOTTOM. Type Ib was produced only as an imperforate stamp. Six positions on Plate 1 Early furnished stamps qualifying as Type Ib -- Positions 3-6R and 8-9R -- distinguished by the complete design at top and nearly complete design at bottom. When first entered on the plate, these six positions (as well as 7R1E) had the complete design at top and bottom. However, unlike 7R, small portions of the bottoms were burnished away. Positions 6R and 8R had less of the bottom erased than the other Type Ib positions, particularly in the left plume, and for this reason they are more desirable examples of the type. All Type Ib stamps are very scarce, and the two best examples (6R and 8R) are rare. These top-row positions usually have an ample top margin, but frequently the margins are close or cutting into the bottom. A Type Ib with large margins all around is a great rarity. With its wide bottom margin and sound condition, this is an unusually choice Type Ib. With 1999 and 2006 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (VF 80 Jumbo, SMQ $13,800.00 for 80, $21,200.00 for 85). 1006°		3c Dull Red, Ty. II (11A). Large margins to just in, tied by light strike of New York town datestamp on Barnabas Bates illustrated propaganda cover with elaborate design for Cheap Inland and Ocean Postage, wonderful depiction of steamship and railroad train, imprint on back, trivial edgewear, stamp slightly oxidized VERY FINE. A RARE AND SPECTACULAR BARNABAS BATES "CHEAP INLAND AND OCEAN POSTAGE" PROPAGANDA COVER. Barnabas Bates (1785-1853) was born in England and came to the United States as a child. He became a Baptist preacher in Rhode Island, where he was also for some time collector of the port of Bristol under President Adams. Bates became a Unitarian and established in New York in 1825 a weekly paper called the Christian Inquirer. During the administration of Andrew Jackson he received an appointment in the New York post office and was for some time acting postmaster. He became a reform advocate for cheap land and ocean postage, founding the New York Cheap Postage Association, which published this envelope in 1851. Top right diagonal half with large margins, tied all around by "New-York Ship Jul. 25" circular datestamp on blue linen-lined envelope to Baltimore Md., sender's routing "Via Nicaragua" and perfectly clear strike of blue 'VIA NICARAGUA/AHEAD OF THE MAILS" two-line framed handstamp, immaculate condition EXTREMELY FINE. A MAGNIFICENT BISECTED USE OF THE 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE WITH A REMARKABLY CLEAR STRIKE OF THE "VIA NICARAGUA/AHEAD OF THE MAILS" LETTER BAG OPERATOR HANDSTAMP. This wonderful cover was featured on the front cover of the sale catalogue for the 1972 H. R. Harmer sale of Frederick R.
