VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A REMARKABLE EARLY COLONIAL LETTER SENT FROM NEW CASTLE, NEW HAMPSHIRE, TO PORTSMOUTH IN 1695.
William Partridge went to England to secure an appointment for himself as Lieutenant Governor, which was apparently a surprise to John Usher, who spent the next several years trying to get himself reappointed. Partridge was appointed on June 26, 1696, but did not assume the post until December 14, 1697. Letters marked "On Her Majesty's Service" were generally carried by courier without charge. (Image)

VERY FINE. A RARE EARLY BRITISH COLONIAL LETTER FROM PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE, TO PORTSMOUTH IN 1698.
The letter is written and signed by Jonathan Bridger, William Partridge and Benjamin Jackson. They were three members of a four-member commission appointed to promote naval interests. In this letter, which is addressed to the New Hampshire Assembly, they promote the idea of growing hemp. In 1699 the Assembly passed such a resolution.
William Partridge was appointed Lieutenant Governor of New Hampshire on June 26, 1696, but did not assume the post until December 14, 1697. This position was directly subservient to the Governor of Massachusetts Bay. He held this position until Sep. 15, 1698. Letters marked "On Her Majesty's Service" were generally carried by courier without charge.
