H No. 2 27 Nov. 69" octagonal datestamp applied aboard the French ship on the day it left New York, Paris, "Lyon a Marseilles" and receiving backstamps, minor edgewear VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE QUADRUPLE-RATE FRANKING OF THE 15-CENT TYPE II 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE, CARRIED DIRECTLY BY FRENCH PACKET FROM NEW YORK. Jul. 4" (1870) circular datestamp and duplex cork cancel on Phantom Rate cover to Paris, France, indistinct red "New York Paid All Br. Transit" backstamp and matching "6" credit handstamp on front, red London (Jul. 19) transit and "PD" oval, Calais transit and Paris receiving backstamp, reduced approx. -2/3 in. at left FINE AND COLORFUL EXAMPLE OF THE PHANTOM RATE TO FRANCE SHOWING A VERY EARLY APPLICATION OF THE 6-CENT CREDIT TO ENGLAND. Effective July 1, 1870, the new Anglo-French postal convention reduced the rate between Great Britain and France to 3p per 10 grams, which in turn reduced the Phantom Rate from 12c to 10c (with a corresponding reduction in credit to GB from 8c to 6c). The 15c stamp is a typical overpayment of the 10c Phantom Rate. The cover was carried on the Cunarder Aleppo on its first voyage, departing New York on July 7, 1870. Ex Hubbard and Coulter. Gorgeous centering with wide and balanced margins all around, deep rich colors and proof-like impressions, used with 3c Green (147), tied by circle of wedges cancels and "Providence R.I. Oct. 31" circular datestamp on cover to Athens, Greece, red "New York Nov. 2" transit datestamp at bottom, 1870 docketing at top left, bold "P.D." handstamp, Vienna and receiving backstamps, red ms. "8" credit for transport beyond Germany, blue crayon rates VERY FINE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED 1869 15-CENT TYPE II COVERS TO GREECE. A COLORFUL AND EXTRAORDINARY FOREIGN-MAIL USAGE. The 23c rate to Greece by North German Union Closed Mail was reduced to 18c on July 1, 1870 (the 18c NGU Direct rate was reduced to 15c on the same date). This cover was correctly prepaid for the new 18c NGU Closed Mail rate. It was carried on the Guion Line's Minnesota, which departed New York on Nov. 2, 1870, and arrived off Queenstown on Nov. 14. The other cover to Greece is ex Coulter, and realized $23,000 hammer in our 2009 Rarities sale.
