EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE FINEST STRIKE OF THE WATERBURY SMALL BEE FANCY CANCELLATION IN EXISTENCE. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE ON A WATERBURY HOTEL CORNER CARD COVER. ONE OF THE FINEST OF ALL WATERBURY COVERS.
The Small Bee cancel is not the rarest of Waterbury designs (21 covers recorded by William T. Crowe), but full and clear strikes are extremely rare. The example offered here, with every nuance of Postmaster John W. Hill's engraving perfectly clear, is truly remarkable.
With 2000 P.F. certificate (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL STRIKE OF THE INTRICATELY-CARVED WATERBURY OLD WOMAN IN BONNET FANCY CANCEL. A MARVELOUS COVER.
William T. Crowe records twelve covers with this cancel in his Waterbury census.
Ex Dr. Jackson and "Lafayette". With 2003 P.F. certificate. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE STRIKE OF THE RARE AND DESIRABLE "CONGRESS GAITER" BUTTONLESS SHOE FANCY CANCELLATION. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST DISTINCTIVE WATERBURY FANCY CANCELLATIONS.
According to Wikipedia, this style of buttonless shoe was invented for Queen Victoria in 1836, utilizing stretchable rubber (a new invention) at the sides in place of laces but still keeping the profile of lace-ups. Its feminine image was soon lost and was adopted by male wearers, at which time it was dubbed the Congress Gaiter or Boston Boot in the United States. William T. Crowe records twelve covers in his Waterbury census.
Ex Matthies. With 2000 P.F. certificate (Image)
VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE RARE LARGE WATERBURY SHIELD ON COVER. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN. A GREAT RARITY.
William T. Crowe records five covers with this cancel in his Waterbury census. As a further indication of rarity, we have only offered one other since keeping computerized records, which also bears a stamp with a rounded corner. None was offered in the Henry Houser collection.
With 1986 P.F. certificate. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE STRIKE OF THE WATERBURY HOLLY SPRIG FANCY CANCEL ON COVER. THIS IS THE FINEST STRIKE WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED.
This cancel shows all of the intricate details of Postmaster John W. Hill's carving, the only Holly Sprig design he created. (Image)
