FINE. A TREMENDOUSLY RARE USE OF THE 1862 5-CENTAVOS FIRST ISSUE ON COVER. ONE OF A MERE FOUR EXAMPLES KNOWN, AND THIS THE EARLIEST KNOWN USE RECORDED.
Nicaragua was the first country in Central America to issue stamps. There are no records which show the exact date of issue. This cover is unlisted in the census prepared by The Mainsheet of November 1998 by Dr. Arthur K.M. Woo which lists three:
1) Horizontal strip of three and single cancelled on cover to Guatemala dated Apr. 19, 1864
2) Horizontal strip of four cancelled on cover to Molfino in Granada (undated)
3) Two examples with 1871 1c Bister tied by "Rivas" straightline cancels on cover addressed locally (circa early 1870s)
According to Brian Moorhouse, the internal letter rate was 5c per quarter ounce listed in the June 1862 Ordenanza de Correos. A 2c rate is not mentioned despite the issuance of a 2c stamp but could be a possible carrier fee.
Confirmed genuine by Eduard Heinze (1863-1934) who was the German Conusl at Managua from 1900-05. With 2010 Moorhouse certificate. (Image)
