3181°   ImageNEWFOUNDLAND, 1860, 5p Violet Brown, "CANCELLED" Handstamp (12A var; SG 13 var). Full margins, rich color, crisp strike at top left of the handstamp used by Perkins Bacon, minute and insignificant thin (not mentioned on certificate)

VERY FINE. A HANDSOME EXAMPLE OF THIS VERY RARE PERKINS BACON "CANCELLED" HANDSTAMP. AN IMPORTANT RARITY OF NEWFOUNDLAND.

Only one block of six was produced with this handstamp. This example is from position 6 of that block. The Jaffe book CANCELLED records just two examples, one of which is in the Royal Collection. This copy was not included in Jaffe's book, as it was discovered subsequent to publication. Therefore, it is one of only two recorded examples in private hands.
