1864 (4 July) envelope "via Marseilles" to London, bearing 1d. carmine-vermilion (9, generally with good to enormous margins) clearly cancelled with several strikes
of the "headquarters" in oval of bars and with Auckland transit c.d.s. for 6 July alongside, the reverse showing a further strike of the Headquarters handstamp alongside superb "new-zealand" double arc d.s. for 4 July; one further stamp torn from the cover at lower right corner, which has been repaired and enhanced, nevertheless a quite remarkable cover from the 2nd. Maori War. B.P.A.
Certificate (1991) before the cover was repaired. Sc. 27; S.G. 97. provenance: H. Gordon Kaye, November 1991 Note: Historically the Headquarters cancellation had been attributed to Otahuhu.
More recently it was considered that it was either used as a mobile post office accompanying General Cameron's Headquarters or at an advanced supply base. Research by Gerald Ellott has shown that the known period of use of this obliterator (23 May to
4 September 1864) coincides with the period of the Tauranga Campaign and that the Headquarters cancellation was used at the Forces Camp at Tauranga. See New Zealand Handbook, Vol. VII, page 281. (Image) |
